Advanced Microsoft Word

 

If you have some experience with Word or completed our introduction to Word course and wish to build your Word skills, this is the course for you.

You will learn to create graphics suitable for inclusion in Word documents, insert and manage data contained in other Windows applications in Word documents. The use of tables will be studied in more detail, as will the use of multiple columns, section breaks, footnotes, mail merge, creating styles, automatic tables of contents and indices, AutoText, etc,.

Enrolling: in-house students

The full day course runs on demand - please send an email to info@designcad.com.au and we will reply with some possible dates. Training in this software is offered in both Adelaide and Canberra, but in Canberra, we need a minimum of three students in a group to cover costs as we hire a training room in the Hotel Kurrajong, National Circuit Barton.

Payment for course materials: in-house students

The cost of the course for in-house training is $A750.00 per person and includes GST. We encourage payment prior to taking the course by direct deposit to our bankers or via PayPal. We encourage payment via PayPal, an organization which takes all credit cards using a secure Internet facility. PayPal is a partner within the eBay system. We have chosen PayPal because it is independent of us, allows us to hold money in trust until we have delivered the course and is now operational in Australia.

We will provide a tax invoice on receipt of payment. If you cannot attend after booking a course, there is no penalty, we will simply re-schedule. If this is not possible, we will refund payment.

Prerequisites:

An understanding of basic computer operation including being able to create, save and locate files. Reasonable experience with Word or completion of our Introduction to Word course. If you have not taken the basic course with us, would you please indicate those modules in the list below which are relevant to your work. We would like to know this in advance so that we can prepare for your visit. If you can attach 'problem' documents or a list of the particular difficulties that you are having, so much the better.

Description

Working with Documents

Various methods for starting Word. Linking desktop shortcuts to particular pieces of work. The value of Windows Explorer. Creating a Word file, saving files in an organized way into a suitable folder structure. The Word interface, the importance of the right mouse button. Manipulating toolbars. Techniques for selecting text - characters, words, lines paragraphs etc. Deciding which view to use - print layout, normal, outline and web. Using the in-built Word wizards. Downloading wizards from the web.

Styles

Learning to use the least used and most important tool in Word. Setting styles .Character styles, paragraph styles, Table styles. Applying the in-built styles to a document. Reviewing a document in which a comprehensive set of custom styles has been applied.

UCI Style manual

The need to use style guides when creating documents. Use of correct abbreviations, punctuations etc. Reviewing some various style guide texts.

Headers & Footer

The importance of including filename, path and date in the footer. Inserting a field such that the time printed is always included in documents. Using tables in headers as an aid to layout.

Footnotes

What's a footnote. When do you use them? Inserting footnotes in a science paper. Editing footnotes, endnotes.

Preliminaries

Installing Word. Word and the operating system. Word on a Macintosh computer. Setting some options in Word - file locations, backup etc. The importance of fonts. The differences between Time New Roman and the Arial font - serif and sans serif fonts. Determining the fonts loaded in your computer. Installing fonts. True type fonts, Open type fonts, Postscript fonts. Fonts and copyright.

Editing & proofing Documents

Editing options - entering text, selecting text using the keyboard and/or the mouse, deleting, copying and moving text. Cut, Paste and the Clipboard. Selecting large blocks of text. Undoing and re-doing an action, and some of the items in the text shortcut menu. Formatting text - font, colour, justification, bold italic etc. Pasting Word material across applications. The importance of the right mouse button. Using the Spike tool. Understanding text flow; paragraph tool - keeping text together.

Editing 2

Describes and demonstrates how to use various graphical toolbars, buttons and features found on the Word screen, including the Formatting toolbar for document formatting, the buttons on the Standard toolbar, and the Ruler bar. Adjusting the size of toolbar icons. Emphasis is placed on developing your skills in formatting paragraphs, including the use of styles. Operating a Spell Check. The Word Thesaurus. The Show/Hide button. Using the ruler, setting tabs and spacing; align tabs, decimal tabs. Setting up columns of text.

More editing

We covers yet more editing options. Included are instructions for changing fonts, tabs, setting margins and page sizes; adding page numbers. Using Reveal Formats, using Find and Replace, using the Format Painter, and the Shrink to Fit feature.

Arranging and printing documents

Configuring a printer. The problems of colour printers and black and white text. The value of Print Preview.

Tables and columns

Inserting tables, using tables, format tables. Working with tabular data, placing text in columns.

Using graphics in Word documents

Types of graphics - clip art (inserting and previewing clip art, sources of clip art), artwork from files - JPEG, GIF, WMF, PSD, fie types. Using the picture and drawing toolbars, editing a graphic, the value of placing graphics in tables, inserting AutoShapes. Creating a diagram, the value of vector graphic programs. Insert and modifying a picture in situ, aligning a picture with text, creating WordArt, draw and modifying a shape.

Charts

Creating a chart. Inserting a chart, modifying the chart, importing data into charts. Organization charts.

Collaborating with others

Tracking changes in documents, adding review comments, protecting a document with passwords, prevent editing and formatting changes, use Word as an email client, comparing and merging documents.

Documents on the web

HTML documents, creating a web page with Word, adding hyperlinks to documents, creating  an XML document.

Forms

set up a form, modify and protect a form, use a form.

Using Word with Excel to mail merge documents

Mail merge is not a simple process. However, when Excel is used in combination with Microsoft Word, merging can be set up to proceed smoothly. In this module we using Excel as a database to hold details of names and addresses, create a form letter in Word, review the data source information, add merge fields and merge this data with the form letter. The filtering data functions in Excel/Word are used to produce letters for specific sub groups.

Large Documents

Managing large documents- master documents and sub-documents, add bookmarks and cross references, create and modify an index, summarize a document.

Writing and updating your CV

Provides advice and guidelines for writing CV (resume).

Using Templates

Explores more of Word's built-in templates. You will learn how to find and select templates, use the address book and experiment with template wizards. The value of templates vs. styles vs. macros.

Presentation Tools

Introduces other features that help you enhance your documents, such as highlighting, headers and footers, lists, and special characters. Using bullets and numbering. Special characters for scientific work. You will also learn how to use the AutoCorrect and AutoText features.
