Applying a watermark in a Word document

There is often a need to place a graphic saying something like DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL, DO NOT COPY etc. on the background to a page in Microsoft Word. These watermarks can be created either with text or with a graphic. Text versions are quite simple to use and the instructions for their use in Word 2003 are set out below.

The watermark 'DRAFT COPY' is added to the page above.

To Add a Watermark

On the Format drop down menu, select Background, then select Printed Watermark.

Select Text watermark, and the following options are available:

  • Text – type the words you want or use the down arrow to make a selection

  • Font, Size (recommend using Auto) and Color – use the down arrows to make a selection

  • Semitransparent - tick or untick for your preference

  • Layout – select Horizontal or Diagonal

Select Apply then Close the dialog box.

Use Print Layout View or Print Preview to see how the printed page will appear.

To Change a Watermark

On the Format drop down menu, select Background, then select Printed Watermark.

Under Text watermark change the options to meet your requirements

Select Apply then Close the dialog box

Use Print Layout View or Print Preview to see how the printed page will appear.

To Remove a Watermark

On the Format drop down menu, select Background, then select Printed Watermark.

At the top of the dialog box select No watermark

Select Apply then Close the dialog box
