Page numbering not working properly in Word 2000

We have been very frustrated by the behaviour of Word 2000 when printing quite large reports. We like to have the phrase "Page xx of (say) 36" printed in the footer of every page. When we tried this recently, Word started renumbering (back to page 10 when in the middle of a series of pages) - frustrating to say the least! and very wasteful of paper. This occurred even though we could see the correct page numbers in the footer as we moved through the document.

We first thought that it was our fault and that we had perhaps started a new section without knowing it and that Word was renumbering from that section. This was not the case. It looks as though this is a bug in Word 2000. Earlier versions of Word do not show this problem.

Workaround.

Instead of printing in the usual File>Print fashion, print from the 'Print Preview' box. Numbering then works flawlessly.
