Remote Access to NT 4.0 using Windows XP

The installation of remote access to Windows 4.0 servers using Windows XP on the remote computer can be tricky.

Microsoft no longer installs the NETBUI protocol (Microsoft's proprietary protocols for simple networking) with a default Windows XP installation. You need to manually install the protocol. This involves copying the required files from the XP master CD-ROM to the Windows folder on the XP machine. This will then allow the XP machine to share files (using NETBUI) on the local network, but still will not allow remote access. The only solution is to remove the NETBUI protocol from all machines and install TCP/IP on every computer. Remote access will then work.
