IntelliCAD like AutoCAD is a command driven program. This means that
you 'drive' the program by typing commands at the keyboard. Even though
you can create drawings by clicking on menu items and toolbar icons,
both programs are command driven. All the menu item or toolbar icon does
is 'feed' the command - LINE, ZOOM, PAN, PEDIT etc to the program. The
command area (or bar) is the zone where these 'feeds' can be seen in
operation.
When first installed, IntelliCAD places the command bar near the top
of the screen.
The Command bar in our view, should always be visible on the screen.
IntelliCAD uses this Command bar area to notify you of the success or
otherwise of the drawing steps that you carry out.
If the Command bar is not visible, move your mouse pointer to the top
of the screen over (say) the standard toolbar. Click the right mouse
button and a pop up menu will appear, allowing you to select the Command
bar. The figure below shows this pop up menu.

The Command bar can be
moved. You can 'grab' the bar by clicking on its border with the left
button of the mouse and (while holding the left button of the mouse
down) drag the bar onto the screen. The bar can be resized and in fact
made quite small. A floating Command bar is shown below.

Floating
the bar can cause problems. For example, if you make the Command bar
quite narrow and then select an IntelliCAD command that has some complex
'feedback' with lots of options, the text in the Command bar are can
wrap around and make interpretation quite difficult (see below).

Here
we have 'floated' the Command bar, made it quite narrow and are in the
midst of using the PEDIT command to edit a polyline. As you can see,
interpreting the 'feedback' from IntelliCAD is difficult.
Rather than
'floating' the bar, we recommend moving it to the bottom of the screen
and docking it there. AutoCAD positions its bar at the bottom of the
drawing editor and we think that it is a better spot.

In
taking a snapshot of the screen, I have trimmed the image at the right.
Rest assured that in IntelliCAD, the message goes to the right of the
screen and can be read easily.
The take home lesson is that the
Command bar is of critical importance when you are drafting because you
get lots of feedback and it needs to be positioned where you can see all
the messages on it clearly.
