Cutting to the chase - purchasing IntelliCAD from Design Cad

Design CAD is an authorized distributor for the SIACAD version IntelliCAD, but only for sales in Australia and New Zealand. Stocks of IntelliCAD are held in Adelaide, ready for immediate delivery.

Here are some important things to consider if you wish to purchase a copy of IntelliCAD from us.

The cost

Single copies of IntelliCAD cost $A350.00. We do not deliver by download from the Internet and deliver on CD-ROM with a registration card and activation code in the package. The price includes GST and delivery charges. Delivery is by Australia Post Express Post service (to New Zealand by air freight). The installation CD-ROM comes complete with a 600 page IntelliCAD manual in PDF form (and a complete tutorial on how to use IntelliCAD). Please note that the above price does not include a printed manual.

We can however provide a high quality printed manual for $A35.00 extra over and above the $350.00. [We aim to become a carbon neutral company and try wherever possible to cut down on the use of paper and other resources.].

We have written a comprehensive set of notes on installing IntelliCAD. Here is the link: http://www.icad.net.au/intellicad/install_cad/install_cad6.htm

Discounts

We offer discounts for multiple copies of IntelliCAD - 10% for 2, 15% for three, 20% for 4-10.

SIACAD IntelliCAD - the difference

Our version of IntelliCAD offers a unique toolbar which gathers together a number of valuable speed drafting tools - XREF manager, image handler, a sophisticated layer manager for quickly isolating entities, turning multiple layers off in a single click etc, a revision cloud, simplified dimension manager, etc. We also are able to offer SIACAD - a well integrated architectural front end for IntelliCAD.

There are many different flavours of IntelliCAD available from vendors. Some are available  from the Internet and are supplied as a download (minus a manual); some can be ordered and shipped with/without a manual and most offer some sort of bonus in the form of a block library or bonus toolbar.

IntelliCAD standard vs. IntelliCAD Professional (more below)

We only sell the standard version of IntelliCAD. The term standard has unfortunate connotations. IntelliCAD standard is a 2D and 3D wire frame modeller and is suitable for the vast bulk of CAD drafting commonly carried out in Australia.

There is a common misconception that AutoCAD LT and IntelliCAD are strictly 2D drafting tools. This is incorrect.

We do not supply IntelliCAD Professional. This so-called 'Professional' version of IntelliCAD simply adds rendering of 3D models and solid modelling to IntelliCAD. We believe that there are better alternatives if that is what you want to do.

Floating licences

We are not able to offer a floating server licence pricing model for IntelliCAD. We are aware of one vendor of IntelliCAD who offers this facility, but have not had any experience with it.

Upgrades

There are no annual upgrade charges for IntelliCAD. When a new version of IntelliCAD is released, we offer substantial discounts to existing clients, but you get to keep your old IntelliCAD licence.

Compatibility with AutoCAD

As Autodesk release each new version of AutoCAD, they change the format of the drawing file structure. Since IntelliCAD uses the OpenDWG standard, it (IntelliCAD) will usually lag slightly behind AutoCAD. It will not necessarily open the very latest version of AutoCAD DWG files. Experience has shown that the OpenDWG consortium is able to provide IntelliCAD with tools to read/write to new AutoCAD version files quite soon after the release of the new AutoCAD version, however there can be no guarrantee that this will occur.

Note that unlike AutoCAD, IntelliCAD can write DWG files all the way back to very early versions of AutoCAD - to version 2.5 if you wish! This means that you can communicate with all clients, no matter what version of AutoCAD they are using.

Recommended system requirements

Operating system

Microsoft Windows 98/2000/XP. We prefer Windows XP Pro, although the program works well enough with Windows XP Home edition.

IntelliCAD does not run on Macintosh computers.

Processor

We recommend and test IntelliCAD on computers with the Pentium series of processors, but see no reason the program will not run effectively on computers powered by AMD processors. We recommend Pentium P4 and above.

Memory

 256MB main memory or higher.

Storage capacity

We recommend 80 Gigabytes or more.

CD/DVD

We like dual layer CD/DVD burners, but all that is required is a CD-ROM drive. DVD burners enable easy backup of large amounts of drawing data.

Graphics card

We have a preference for 'stand alone' plug in graphics cards such as those manufactured by nVidia rather than those 'on board' as part of the motherboard, but on-board graphic cards work well enough. If you are buying a new CAD workstation, try and specify a card which will support two monitors.

Monitor

We recommend a minimum of 17 inch LCD monitor.

More on versions of IntelliCAD

There are two versions of IntelliCAD - Standard and Professional. The standard version will creatre 3D models and supports the SHADE &  HIDE commands, but not the RENDER command. The Professional version does support the RENDER command and is therefore able to render 3D wire frame designs, apply materials to surfaces and enable the creation and placement of light sources.

We believe that tools such as SketchUp offer a better alternative for rendering and tools like ProEngineer are much better for solid modelling than the Professional version of IntelliCAD.

Drawing constructed using IntelliCAD and imported to SketchUp for rendering.

For 'dressing up 2d drawings', we recommend passing IntelliCAD drawings to Adobe Illustrator via the DXF output command.

Plan for courtyard developed in IntelliCAD 6 and passed to Adobe Illustrator for 'dressing up'.
